Medal „Za zdobycie Królewca” został ustanowiony dekretem Prezydium Rady Najwyższej ZSRR z dnia 9 czerwca 1945 roku. Autorem projektu medalu był artysta A. I. Kuzniecow.
Medal „Za zdobycie Królewca” przyznawany jest żołnierzom Armii Czerwonej, Marynarki Wojennej i wojsk NKWD, którzy bezpośrednio brali udział w bohaterskim szturmie i zdobyciu miasta-twierdzy Królewiec w dniach od 23 stycznia do 10 kwietnia 1945 r., a także organizatorom i dowódcom działań bojowych podczas zdobywania tego miasta.

Die Medaille „Für die Einnahme von Königsberg“ wurde durch ein Dekret des Präsidiums des Obersten Sowjets der UdSSR am 9. Juni 1945 eingeführt. Der Autor des Medaillenentwurfs war der Künstler A. I. Kusnezow.
Die Medaille „Für die Einnahme von Königsberg“ wird an Soldaten der Roten Armee, der Marine und der NKWD-Truppen verliehen, die vom 23. Januar bis 10. April 1945 direkt am heldenhaften Angriff und der Einnahme der Festungsstadt Königsberg beteiligt waren, sowie an die Organisatoren und Leiter der Kampfhandlungen während der Einnahme dieser Stadt.
Die Medaille „Für die Eroberung Königsbergs“ besteht aus Messing und hat die Form eines perfekten Kreises mit einem Durchmesser von 32 mm.
