When Flash first approached me to write the notes for his band's new album (if you can consider an obscene phone call an "approach'), I thought about composing a serious essay on the subject of "Tire Chains As Fifties' Glitter"-you know: terminal prose with such great lines as, "Studs were the big thing, both metal and male."--but I thought better of it. Anyone who treats Flash Cadillac and the Conti- nental Kids seriously would probably be called a sissy.
Then I considered the esoteric approach: lots of obscure facts about the few oldies contained here. I mean, it's interesting to know that Leiber & Stoller first wrote "Message From Garcia" for the Coasters, but the group rejected it because they thought it might be too "ethnic." But who cares? Besides, that song certainly wouldn't offend anybody today-except maybe Herb Alpert, who's Jewish.
Finally, I decided to write about what great guys the band were and how much fun they were to listen to. But then I realized I couldn't blow an image it's taken them five years to build.
So all that's left to say is that if you remember the red-jacketed band in the high school gym from American Graffiti, this is them. In the film, they weren't the funny, obnoxious "gang" of hoods they usually are on the concert stage, relying on reviving mouldy oldies. And now, on this new album, Flash Cadillac has taken a big step forward performing original songs with a fresh, new approach.
To be sure, their raunchy roots are still showing, but the opening cut here sums it all up: it's all about "Dancin' On A Saturday Night." And the coda of the album (from "Rock and Roll Heaven") is the coda for these notes: "If you believe in forever, then life is just a one-night stand./If there's rock and roll heaven; well, you know they got a hell of a band."**And Flash has already applied for the gig-weekends only, of course -Chris Van Nes
